If you've taken classes with me in the last 5 years you know we always start class with 3 dimensional dance drills. These movements use core muscles to isolate hips and chest on the 3-dimensional plane- moving up/down, left/right, and forward/back. Drills are essential for building muscle memory and help develop core strength needed for belly dance. Third dimension is all about isolating on horizontal and vertical planes. We tend to drill in time with the music, which is where the 4th dimension enters.
The 4th dimension adds the layer of speed and direction- in physics we call this velocity. We start out slow at half-time (1 - and - 2 - and - 3 - and - 4 - and). As we get the hang of it we pick it up to full time (1 - 2 - 3 - 4). Then we speed it up to double time (12345678) where the moves happen on the numbers 1, 2, 3, etc. This gets us used to timing our movements with the music and synchronizes our steps. Once we have the isolation drill and timing we can take it for a walk moving forwards and back in counts of 8. We may take it side to side as well or walking around in a circle. Turns are another aspect of the 4th dimension- we can take 1/4 turns, 1/2 turns, and full turns pivoting on our own axis. The 5th dimension is where the magic happens. This is where we connect to divine source and to each other through proper posture, formations, and cues. We play with eye contact, arms and hand position, and softening the face. With the addition of cues and formations, we can move in sync as a group without the need for choreography. Dancing in cooperation, not competition. Adding this 5th dimension is key to having a meaningful dance experience.
